The R designation is not to be confused with a recon bird. The Mohljaniir used the "R" to designate attack ships. The word Rhujubahr bieng the Mohljaniir word for predator, or predatory beast.
The R-45 is perhaps the most Heavily armed fighter ever produced. It's intended role as an anti-ship strike ship required the Space frame of the F-45 be stretched to the breaking point. The required internal space for weapons, auxiliary fuel cells, and power distribution networks required the engineers to move the four High yield Quantum resonance triggered plasma drives to the wingtips, of the craft.
The choice to go with a heavy under slung Hyper beam over a missile or torpedo load came from the need to produce a strike fighter that was not dependent on ever diminishing supply of ordnance.
coupling the slow firing beam weapon to twin turret mounted rapid fire guns allowed the harpy to defend itself, against smaller more agile fighters on it's high peed dash into it's main guns effective striking range.
This hugely over gunned design boasted firepower equivalent to a corvette and could inflict heavy damage on capital ships, making it a serious threat to even Najuhlim heavy warships when they could attack in large groups.
The ships heavy shield and armor, as well as it's massive main gun led to it being referred to as a flying tanks. The pilots of thee heavy craft did not seem to mind the label, and often used modified blitzkrieg tactics when hunting larger targets.
Harpy Units would mass in large squadrons, blasting through the enemy defenses using, surprise, speed, and massed firepower to completely overwhelm the enemy fighters, escorts and frigates screening their target.
Due to the fighters requirements for gunnery, and heavy workload monitoring and managing tit's power systems two cyborg brains were installed int he pilots module. these crew men served with he same pilot their entire career and often became part of the pilots extended family.
In the last stages of the war, the R-45 was difficult to produce in numbers, many were reassigned from attack duty to convoy and colonial protection as the relocation and evacuation process began in earnest.
When not engaged in combat with their main weapons powered down the R-95 has extraordinary range, and the addition of in flight refueling and replenishment allowed the small crew to operate the craft non stop for weeks at a time while raveling with heir convoy.
As a result a handful of R-45s still operate today, working as colonial guard ships for the small Mohljaniir survivor enclaves, and occasionally acting as Privateers and merchant raiders against Najuhlim shipping.
